Catacombs of San Giovanni
Via San Giovanni alle Catacombe 96100 Siracusa SR, Italy 33 m C
Description:
The Catacombs of St. Giovani were built later than all in the city and date back to the IV - VI centuries AD. They were used as a necropolis. Burying the dead here began after the cessation of persecution of Christians. Due to this fact, these catacombs are the most decorated of all Syracuse burials and have a clear plan. A characteristic feature is family burials in the form of arxoliums. Near the catacombs there are churches, one of which gave them their name.
Catacombs were built on the basis of an aqueduct, which was intended to supply water to the city. Cisterns for collecting water have been preserved.
The catacombs of Saint Giovani are now under the protection of the Pope.
