Proclamation of the Republic of Italy
Description:
It was on this day that the entire population (including even women for the first time!) came to the polls to decide to bid farewell to the monarchy forever, to proclaim a republic, to adopt a republican system of government, and to elect members of the assembly, who were subsequently entrusted with the important duty of writing the new Constitution of Italy.
It is celebrated as a state holiday in accordance with the law on the National holiday signed on November 20, 2000 by the President of Italy. From that day on, Italy ceased to be a monarchy and switched to a republican system of government.
Military parades are usually held in major cities on this day. In Rome, along the avenue of the Imperial Forums from the Colosseum to the foot of the Capitol, festive columns are held, consisting of representatives of all arms. In the sky over the center of Rome fly the latest fighters "Eurofighter", spraying in the air the colors of the national flag of Italy.
