Piedigrotta in Italy

naplesNaples is considered the musical capital of Italy. And it is in this wonderful city on the night of 7 to 8 September is a festival-competition for the best lyrical song, known as Piedigrotta.

It is quite interesting the origin and development of this holiday. Not far from Naples, in the cave of Piedigrotta in ancient times there was a temple of pagan origin, and religious cults were performed by dancing priestesses.

Later on this holiday layered another, already Christian character, in honor of the Madonna. The church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta was built on the site of the cave. The day of this Madonna began to celebrate not only processions, but also the performance of folk songs.
