Grottoes del Angelo di Pertosa
Localita Muraglione 18/20 - 84030 Pertosa (SA)
Description:
Nature has been working on these magnificent caves for about 35 million years. Now the beginning of the cave is flooded by the Negro River, along which you can swim and view its surroundings. Waterfalls, meeting with light and shadow, enchant and fascinate. The atmosphere is truly mysterious and even mystical: groups of stalactites and stalagmites accumulate in figures that are even given names. It’s hard to imagine how much time and effort nature takes to create such miracles.
Del Angelo di Pertoza did not destroy any earthquake, which means that the tunnels are much safer than the street, and our ancestors knew about it. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans carried out their rituals and sacred activities underground. Documents say that the cave was used as a dwelling and as a church (in the twelfth century).
The Caves of del Angelo di Pertoza in Puglia is a unique natural and archaeological monument that annually attracts thousands of tourists.
