San Sabino Cathedral
Piazza dell'Odegitria, 1, 70122 Bari, Italy
Description:
The Cathedral of San Sabino is the main Roman Catholic temple of the city of Bari, which is dedicated to the bishop of Canoza - St. Savin, whose relics rest in this temple.
The cathedral was built at the turn of the XII and XIII centuries on the ruins of the cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, which was destroyed by William I the Evil - the Sicilian king. The cathedral was rebuilt and modified for many years in a row, only in the 1950s it was returned to its original Romanesque appearance.
The facade of the cathedral with three portals is decorated with a round window-outlet, above which is a jumper with images of mythical creatures. The stone bell tower of the cathedral was erected recently. Its dome is distinguished by Arabic motifs.
Inside the cathedral there are three chapels, which share 16 columns with arcades. In the crypt of the church rest the remains of Saint Savin. There is also an icon of the Madonna Odigitria, which was brought here from the East in the VIII century.
