Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore

Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore Rome Italy

Description:

The Cathedral of Our Lady (Santa Maria Maggiore) was built on the site of the temple of Neptune in the XII century in Barletta in southern Italy. The temple was built and expanded for two centuries. Repair of the cathedral ended in the XVI century.

The church is oriented from east to west. The bell tower is located on the north side next to the Palace of the Holy Cross, which can be easily accessed through the arch.

In the twentieth century, a series of restoration works were carried out in the temple, which helped to preserve the medieval appearance of the temple.

The main facade originally had three portals, which were later destroyed. Some bas-reliefs of the portal inside the cathedral depict scenes of the Last Supper and the entrance of Christ to Jerusalem. The altar is a gothic pentahedral absid with a saaltar bypass.
