Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Donato Duomo)
Description:
The Cathedral of St. Donatus is located on the site of an early Christian church on the top of the hill on which Arezzo is located, and towers over the entire Aretin valley.
The construction of the cathedral, begun in 1278, stretched for a long time, and was completed only in 1511.
The existing neo-Gothic facade with three deep profiled portals with pointed archivolts on twisted columns, replacing the unfinished facade of the 16th century, was erected in 1901-1914 according to the project of Dante Viviani. The rich sculptural decor was made by masters Giuseppe Cassioli, Enrico Quatrini and Viviani himself.
