Visiting Francis of Assisi
Description:
The medieval city of Assisi, picturesquely located on the slope of Mount Subasio, is known worldwide primarily for the fact that St. Francis, patron of Italy, founder of the Franciscan Order and one of the most influential religious figures of the Middle Ages, was born, lived and found eternal rest here.
The history of the city is closely connected with the history of St. Francis. His way of life, as through a prism, reflected not only on all historical sights of the city, but still continues to influence its modern appearance and way of life.
Temples, churches, religious attributes are easily recognized on the famous frescoes of Giotto (XIII century) in the Basilica of St. Francis.
Our tour will consist of 4 parts: a visit to the city and its temples, a visit to the frescoes of Giotto, the fortress of Maggiore and Eremo delle Carcheri.
In more detail, it looks like this:
- Santa Maria degli Angeli (XVI-XVIII century) inside which, like a nesting doll, there is a sacred chapel of the Franciscans, Porziuncula (IV century).
- The Cathedral of St. Rufin, bearing the name of the patron of the city, standing on the site of the Roman forum in which St. Francis was baptized.
Piazza del Commune, the Palace of Captaino del Popolo, the ancient Roman temple of Minerva (I century BC) The fact that the German poet Goethe came to Assisi only to see the temple speaks volumes.
New church (XVII century), built on the site of the parental house of St. Francis.
The Basilica of St. Chiara (XIII century), which preserves the cross icon of St. Damian, as a symbol of the mission of the Franciscans given to them from the Lord.
The Church of St. Stefano (XII-XIII centuries), where the Franciscan tradition dictates the hour of agony and death of St. Stephen. Francis to ring the bells.
- Basilica of St. Francis and inspection of Giotto's frescoes.
- the majestic fortress of Rocca Maggiore (IX-XIV centuries), which offers the best view of the city and the endless hills and valleys of Umbria.
- Eremo delle Carcheri, located 4 km from the city where St. George once lived. St. Francis, and where peace, tranquility, and peace reign.
