Church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary

Description:

The Church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary (Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata delle Grazie) is a bulky gray complex located in the heart of the Lower City of Bergamo. In the XV century on this place there was a magnificent monastery of St. Bernardine of Siena: four courtyards were surrounded by gardens and forests, in the Church of St. Mary the walls and vaults were painted with frescoes.

At the beginning of the last century, the monastery was destroyed. The surviving two courtyards shared the new church of Santa Maria Immacolia delle Grazie in 1857 and the nearby Bergamo Bank. Judging by the basketball rings, the courtyard of the church is sometimes used as a sports field, new neighbors schoolchildren or bored priests are unknown.

Inside the church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, above the altar of the left transept, a canvas by Gian Paolo Cavanya from 1619 was miraculously preserved. On the lap of the Virgin Mary is depicted the baby Jesus, in the background, behind the marble throne - the city of Bergamo.

However, much more impressive is the huge fresco by Cesare Myroni in the center, behind the main church altar, depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise.
