Old Town Hall

Palazzo della Ragione, Via dei Mercanti, Bergamo, Italy

Description:

It housed the city municipality until a fire almost completely destroyed the building in the middle of the XIII century. Large-scale restoration work began, which was completed almost a hundred years later - in 1453. Unfortunately, the restored building was not destined to stand intact for long, since in 1513, during their invasion of Italy, Spanish troops burned the Town Hall again. Reconstruction in 1520 was entrusted to the Italian master Pietro Isabello, who, by the way, for quite a long time delayed the start of work, quite likely fearing that in the middle of the restoration again did not happen some cataclysm. In 1538, when the local authorities had already begun to express their displeasure at such a long preparatory stage, Pietro took up business. As a result of the restoration, the building was significantly transformed: the entrance was crowned with four columns, and the facade was decorated with a winged lion - a tribute to St. Mark.

In the building of the Town Hall there are paintings of the series “Philosophers”, written by an outstanding representative of the High Renaissance – master Donato Bramante.
