King Enzo's Palace
Piazza Maggiore 1, 40124 Bologna, Italia
Description:
The Palace of King Enzo is located on Piazza Maggiore in the center of Bologna, Italy. It was built in early 1245 and was originally called the New Palace. In 1249, at the Battle of Fossalt, the Bologna army won the battle and captured the son of Emperor Frederick II, King Enzo of Sardinia, who for 23 years, until his death, was a prisoner in this palace.
In the left part of the castle there are prison rooms, from which you can get to the chapel of Our Lady of Prisoners, located on the second floor. Previously there were courtrooms here. In the rooms of the lower floor of the palace were kept various military vehicles and carroccio - a unique cart with the standards of the Commune, which in any case should not fall into the hands of enemies.
In 1905, restoration work was carried out in the castle, which was headed by the famous architect Alfonso Rubbiani. The building was given its present Gothic appearance. Nowadays, this place attracts many tourists who want to know what secrets the Palace of King Enzo holds.
