Parish Church in Cortina

Description:

The parish church dedicated to the apostles Philip and James (it. santi Filippo e Giacomo), built in 1769-1775 by the architect Giuseppe Promperg-Costa della Val Badia on the site of the Gothic church standing here. The church was painted by Franz Anton Zeiler (1716-1794), known for many of his works in the churches of Tyrol. The high altar was built in 1773 by Johann Musac (1745-1793). The altarpiece depicts the Madonna and the saints to whom the church is dedicated and painted in 1679 by Antonio Sanci. Music also created side altars. The bell tower has a long history. In the first version it was built in 1590. The existing tower is the fifth in a row. Its height is 69.5 m. On the tower are several bronze bells of different sizes, happily avoided being melted down for cannon production during the First World War. The cancellation took place on the orders of Emperor Charles I during his trip to the front through Cortina. Since then, the plays performed on the bells retain their uniqueness from a historical point of view.
