Ducal palace
Italy, Ferrara, Piazza Municipio, 1
Description:
The ducal castle is located in the heart of Ferrara, its main facade faces the Cathedral of the city, in addition, the palazzo is connected by an elaborate bridge with the castle d’Este – this ensemble is the pride of Ferrara.
The ducal castle was the first residence of the Counts d’Este, it was built in 1245, its official value remained until the XVI century, it was at this time that the d’Este family moved to the new palace.
Despite the fact that the castle in the XV century, and later in the XVIII and XX centuries underwent some changes in connection with restructuring and reconstruction, it still retains the harsh charm of the Middle Ages. You will undoubtedly be reminded of this by the pointed windows of the main facade, a wide passage arch guarded by two statues - the Marquis Niccolò III on horseback and the Duke of Borso d'Este, sitting on the throne. Unfortunately, these sculptures are only artfully executed copies and are not the same age as the Middle Ages, the originals were destroyed during the Napoleonic reign.
The interior of the Ducal Palace for many centuries has gathered various styles, special attention here deserves the “Duchess’ Room”, inhabited by painted wooden panels of the XVI century.
Currently, the castle is the Commune of Ferrara, so you need to arrange a visit in advance.
