Cathedral
Description:
The Cathedral of Ferrara was built in honor of the patron saint of the city - St. George. The relief figure of the saint is above the main entrance to the basilica, he appears to us in armor and on horseback, with a sword in his hands, defeating the dragon, who personifies the forces of evil.
The cathedral was built in the Romanesque style in the XII century, but over the next two centuries the upper tiers of the basilica were rebuilt in the spirit of the Gothic.
The exterior of the cathedral is amazing, it seems to be woven from a web, frozen over the centuries and turned into stone. Filigree work of medieval masters is a real masterpiece of Italian art. Arrowed light arches, standing on the thinnest columns of various shapes, carved decorations make the cathedral truly magical.
The decoration of the entire main facade is undoubtedly a late Gothic baldachin, consisting of a three-arched loggia with a marble parapet. Here you will see the statue of the Madonna and the baby, and above them are the scenes of the Last Judgment.
Currently, the Cathedral is used not as a parish church, but as a place where solemn events of the diocese are held - papal and archbishop's services. In spring, the festival of the Blessing of Banners is traditionally held here - the award of winners in four competitions of Palio Ferrara.
