Girolamo Savonarole Monument

Piazza Municipale, Ferrara, Italia

Description:

In Ferrara, on Girolamo Savonarola Square, there is a monument to the man after whom it is named. Savonarola is known for leading a mass revolt in Florence against the tyranny of the Medici, where he was later arrested and burned. Rebel was born in Ferrara on September 21, 1452.

Girolamo was a talented orator, a zealous preacher, and a writer and poet. All his rebellious nature is reflected in the stone statue – one hand is turned to the people, the other is directed to the sky, the call to revolt is frozen on his face forever.

Savonarola was excommunicated for seditious speeches, but a century later Pope Paul IV rehabilitated him in the eyes of the religious community, and even later, in 1875, his fellow Ferrara citizens erected a monument to the rebel. This statue is part of the Worms monument, as Girolamo was one of the predecessors of the Reformation.
