Via della Canonica, 1,50122 Firenze, Italy
Description:
The Florence Cathedral, aka Santa Maria del Fiore, is the most famous architectural creation of the Florentine quatrocento. The cathedral was built in total for more than six centuries. The cathedral was consecrated in 1436, although it had not yet been completed. At that time, it was the largest cathedral in Europe - it could accommodate up to 30 thousand people at the same time. The cathedral took its final form in the late 18th century, when architect Emilio de Fabris assembled a new facade in the style of Florentine Gothic.
The cathedral is made in the form of a Latin cross. Sunlight penetrates inside through stained glass windows made in a simple square form. The interior of the cathedral impresses with its cultural treasures, among which you can find the works of Donatello, Pollaiolo, Michelangelo. The unique clock created by Uccello’s hands is especially distinguished – it was started in 1443 and continues to go to this day.
