Signoria Square

Piazza della Signoria, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy

Description:

Piazza della Signoria is located in Florence and is currently home to the Municipality of Florence. It is a kind of open-air museum.

The square has a rich history since Roman times. The Romans used it as a theater, after the towers were built on the square and the Uberti family settled in them, but a few years later the family was killed and the buildings were destroyed. So the square was formed.

It takes its name from the Palace of Signoria, now called Palazzo Vecchio.

Signoria is one of the main squares of Florence. In the center of the square you can admire the fountain "Neptune", which was designed by Ammonati. The fountain is a group of sculptures in the center of which is Neptune.

Very attractive and interesting Loggia Lanzi. It is an arched pavilion with fifteen statues under the roof. Unfortunately, most of the statues are extremely artfully made copies. Two works are originals (Persei with the head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini and Hercules and Centaur by Giambologna).

Also on the square you should pay attention to the equestrian statue of Duke Cosimo I Medici, created by Giambolonia. On the ground you can see a round marble slab, which was the site of the burning of the reformer monk Girolamo Savonarola in 1498.
