River Arno

Arno river, Firenze

Description:

The Arno River is one of the major rivers in Italy after the famous Tiber River.

The river flows in the Tuscany region, its length reaches two hundred and forty-eight kilometers. The source of the river is located in Arezzo, it flows into the Ligurian Sea near the city of Pisa.

On the way of the river is the city of Florence, which sometimes suffers from floods. One of the most famous floods occurred in 1966. This year, the city suffered the most significant damage - the city embankment was destroyed, forty people died, rare books and works of art were destroyed.

Flooding was largely due to the fact that the flow rate of the river is not stable. However, the dams around Florence helped to stabilize the situation.
