Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ in Florence
Description:
An Orthodox church located on the banks of the Mugnon River. The church was built in the Moscow-Yaroslavl style by architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky at the end of the XIX century and solemnly consecrated in 1903. Its colored domes are related to the church with the most beautiful religious buildings of Russia: the Church of St. Basil in Moscow and the Savior-on-Blood in St. Petersburg.
The Church was considered by Russian Orthodoxy as a “redemptive monument” for the sin of Metropolitan Isidore signing the Church Union of Florence in 1439 with the Vatican.
Russian and Italian masters took part in the painting of the temple.
Another interesting attraction of the church is the bronze ship bell of the ship "Diamond". This ship was the only surviving vessel after the defeat of the Russian army in the Battle of Tsushima in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War. After the revolution on the "Diamond" from Russia fled hundreds of immigrants. Later, the ship itself fell into disrepair and was destroyed, but its memory was preserved in this unusual way.
