Statue of David in the square
Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Italy
Description:
Florence, a city-museum, cannot be imagined without a marble statue of David. The image of the biblical youth is the ideal of beauty. Graceful, noble, full of determination, tranquility and confidence, it is considered a kind of symbol of the city.
It took the master more than two years to make the masterpiece. The 5-meter statue of the biblical youth is carved from a solid block of Carrara marble and weighs more than 6 tons.
The perfect work of Michelangelo for more than three centuries, from 1504 to 1873, adorned the central square of the city of Piazza della Signora. During this time, David had to endure a lot - winds, rains, vagaries of weather, lightning strikes, shelling by rebels. He even lost his arm during one of the 16th century uprisings, a scar still visible on the statue. In the end, in order to protect the genius of Michelangelo, it was decided to transfer the original to the Academy of Arts, and to put a copy of the monument on the square. This was done in 1910.
