Many great Russian artists visited Liguria, spending more or less a long time here. The first was Aivazovsky: he first came to Genoa in 1842 and returned there 30 years later to collect material for paintings dedicated to the feat of Christopher Columbus. In 1883 in Genoa stayed for a short time Ilya Repin, Alexander Benois and Mikhail Vrubel, the local aristocrat was visited by Vera Nikolaevna Tretyakova, the wife of the founder of the Tretyakov Gallery, with daughters Maria and Love! At the end of September 1894, Anton Chekhov also stayed in Genoa for several days, who was amazed by the many ships in the port and the splendor of the Staglieno cemetery. The image of Genoa is imprinted in his memory and is reflected in the fourth act of The Seagull, where Dr. Dorn utters the following words: There (in Genoa) is a superb street crowd. When you leave the hotel in the evening, the whole street is crowded. Then you move in the crowd without any purpose, along a broken line, live with it, merge with it mentally and begin to believe that in fact one world soul is possible. I hope you don’t think about where or how to spend your vacation!
