San Lorenzo Cathedral

Piazza San Lorenzo 16123 Genova, Italia

Description:

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Genoa dedicated to St. Lawrence. The temple is located near the Ducal Palace and the Square de Ferrari. The cathedral is famous for its legend that in its place there was once a temple, the founder of which in the III century was St. George himself. Laurentius.

The architecture of the cathedral is characterized by its asymmetry. On the sides of the facade are two very different structures of the tower. Initially, the project was supposed to be symmetrical, but one of the towers was never completed and a gallery was erected on its top in the XV century. The right bell tower was built in Renaissance style and has seven bells. The facade is decorated with three portals, works of French masters. From the sides of the stairs of the temple there are stone lions.

The interior of the cathedral is remarkable with columns of the XIII century, as well as frescoes of an unknown Byzantine master of the XIV century. In the chapel you can see statues of prominent Italian masters of the XV-XVI centuries.

The main attractions of the cathedral are, of course, the cup, according to legend, was on the table during the Last Supper, and the relics of St. John the Baptist, brought from the crusade in 1098.
