Church of the Holy Sepulchre
Piazza S. Sepolcro, 5, Cagliari, Italy
Description:
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a monumental church in the historic district of Cagliari. Presumably, it was founded in 1564 by the Knights Templar, who organized the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, whose main task was the burial of poor people.
The church consists of one nave with side chapels. One of the many attractions of its interior is the chapel of Our Lady of Mercy, which is a bright representative of the Baroque style. There is a wooden gilded altar with the image of the Madonna and the baby. On the walls there are ancient paintings of historical value. The burial chamber deserves attention, burials in which were made until the middle of the XIX century. It was accessed through a hatch in the center of the nave. The crypt consists of three vaulted rooms decorated with frescoes with mourning draperies. On the vaults of the central room there is a figure of Death in an ermine coat, with a crown and a scythe.
Thanks to restoration work in 1990, the entire church is open to visitors.
