Church of St. Lorenzo
Via SS. Lorenzo e Pancrazio, 09123 Cagliari, Italy
Description:
The Church of San Lorenzo was built at the beginning of the XII century on the top of the Buon Cammino hill, in close proximity to the city walls. It was dedicated to Saint Pancritus and Our Lady of the Good Way, and much later to Saint Lorenzo. The church building was a basilica with a characteristic longitudinal organization of space. In the main motif of the interior of the monastery, semicircular arches were traced. Heavy vaults of the temple required powerful columns and walls.
In the XVIII century, the original Romanesque church building underwent many changes, as a result of which it acquired completely new forms. Currently, the building is a bright representative of classicism, only spherical bunk domes remain from the original building. The structure looks original due to the asymmetry of the facade. In the courtyard of the temple there is a small bell tower.
The interior of the church includes antique furniture, carved altars, a pulpit and painted wooden statues of saints. In the center of the church hall is a miraculous sculpture of the Virgin Mary. On Sundays, during services, the temple is open to visitors.
