San Michele Fortress
Via Sirai, 09121 Cagliari, Italia
Description:
The fortress of San Michele, consisting of three Spanish towers, is located on one of the hills of Cagliari. It was built in the X century and was a defensive structure for many centuries.
The castle occupied a square-shaped territory that was surrounded by a deep moat. It originally consisted of four corner towers with thick stone walls. They were equipped with observation decks with small windows for viewing. Only three of them have survived to this day. In the XIV century, the castle was occupied by the conquerors of the Aragonese dynasty, which allowed them to strengthen their power and prevent attempts to invade from the north. In the XVII century, the fortress was used as an infirmary for plague patients, after which it was abandoned for a long time.
Despite numerous changes, the castle has survived to our time. It is used as a park, as well as a place for temporary exhibitions and other cultural events. From the hill opens an extensive panorama of Cagliari.
