Church of San Biaggio
Description:
The Church of San Biagio, or Chiesa di San Biagio in Italian, is located on the western side of Piazza Stezikoro in Catania. The church was built in the 18th century after a devastating earthquake in 1693. It stands on the very place where, according to legend, there was an oven in which Saint Agatha, patroness of the city of Catania, accepted a martyr’s death for her faith. The girl at first was imprisoned for a long time in prison for which she refused to betray the faith of Christ. She was then brutally tortured by fire and finally cut off her breasts.
