San Antonio Abbey Church
Via Sant'Antonio, 5 - 20122 Milan, Italy
Description:
San Antonio Abbey Church is located between Duomo Square and Milan State University, in the historic center of the city. The temple was built in 1582 on the site of an older monastery founded by monks who devoted themselves to caring for the sick. In the XV century, several hospitals were built in Milan and the need for the services of monks disappeared. The monastery gradually declined.
In 1577, Bishop Carlo Borromeo took office and the Abbey of San Antonio began a new period of prosperity. Throughout its existence, the monastery was repeatedly restored. The neoclassical facade of the temple was designed by the architect Giacomo Tazzini, in the XVII century the restoration was continued by the architect Ricini.
The white walls of the only vaulted nave of the temple are decorated with marble and gold. Especially picturesque are the frescoes of the vaulted ceiling of the main hall, which were painted by the brothers artists Giovanni and Battisto Carlone in 1631 - 1632. The frescoes depict biblical stories. The interiors of the temple are richly decorated with paintings by famous artists.
