Church of San Cristoforo sul Naviglo
Via San Cristoforo, 3, 20144 Milano, Italy
Description:
The Church of San Cristoforo sul Navillo is located in the suburban area of Milan, and is both outside and inside a typical example of Gothic Lombard style. The monastery consists of two buildings, and the interior of the premises is decorated with ancient frescoes of the XV and XVI centuries.
The left building of the church dates back to the VII century, and the right, or Ducal Chapel, dates back to 1398. The chapel was built under the patronage of Gian Galeazzo Visconti after the end of the plague that killed 20,000 inhabitants of Milan. The building was built in honor of Saint Cristoforo.
The left side of the church was rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1192. The last reconstruction took place in the middle of the XIV century, when a Gothic portal with a rose window was built, which is located above the entrance. The simple facade of the building is decorated with rich terracotta ceramics with shelves of white marble. The church has two valuable wooden statues of St. Cristoforo of the XIV and XVI centuries.
