Church of Santa Maria della Pace

Via San Barnaba, 44, 20122 Milano, Italy

Description:

The temple of Santa Maria della Pace is one of the highlights of Milan. It is a titular church built under Pope Sixtus IV in 1480 in gratitude to the Virgin on the occasion of the conclusion of a peace treaty. The author of the original design of the monastery is the famous architect Baccio Pontelli.

In 1656-1667, the temple of Santa Maria della Pace was reconstructed by Pope Alexander VII, resulting in the famous Baroque facade with protruding concave wings and paired Doric columns. Near the church are two medieval chapels decorated with frescoes of religious themes.

The church of Santa Maria della Pace deserves special attention. It is a representative of the classical Baroque. The structure is characterized by numerous hyperbolic details - sculptural groups, relief images and stucco. The main entrance to the temple is made in the form of a semicircle, above it is a huge stained glass window. The first chapel to the right of the entrance to the church is decorated with frescoes by Raphael, representing images of four Sibyls - Kumskaya, Persian, Phrygian and Tiburtina, surrounded by angels.
