Church of Santa Maria della Passione

Via Conservatorio, 12, Milano, Italia

Description:

The Church of Santa Maria della Passione is one of the most important buildings of the Renaissance, located in the center of Milan, near the courthouse. This majestic structure can be compared in size with the world-famous Milan Cathedral. The construction of the temple was designed by the famous architect Giovanni Batgaggio commissioned by the rich bishop Daniele Birago.

Initially, the church was made in the form of a Greek cross, but a century later, architect Martino Bassi changed its appearance, achieving the appearance of a Latin cross by adding three luxurious naves in the center of the building. The entire architecture of the basilica is influenced by Donato Bramante, the founder of the High Renaissance.

The highlight of the temple is a huge dome, the base of which is represented in the form of a polygon. On the facade of the basilica there are sculptural compositions depicting the Passion of Christ, some of them were removed in the XIX century. The interior of the church of Santa Maria della Passione is a real art gallery.
