Santa Maria Presso San Satiro
Via Torino, 17-19, 20123 Milano, Italia
Description:
The church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro is one of the many attractions of Milan, which is the brainchild of Donato Bramante - the discoverer of High Renaissance architecture in Italy. The basilica was rebuilt between 1472 and 1482 with the participation of the wealthy Duke Galeazzo Maria. It is believed that most of the project Santa Maria presso San Satiro was executed by another, no less famous architect, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo.
Currently, it is quite difficult to get into the basilica, since it is not only a unique architectural structure of the XV century, but also an active church, in which a lot of pilgrims gather. At the temple there is a beautiful brick bell tower, the interior of which represents a real art gallery. Its main attraction is a fresco depicting the Madonna and the baby.
The Santa Maria Presso San Satiro has three naves with a cylindrical vault. The central nave is crowned with a huge dome. In the second half of the XIX century, the temple acquired a luxurious baroque facade, which deprived the construction of several Bramantian niches. In general, the structure is devoid of hyperbolic details, it looks quite strict and harmonious.
