Church of Saint Eustorgio
Piazza Sant'Eustorgio 1, 20122 Milano, Italy
Description:
Basilica of Saint-Eustorgio is a famous chapel church, which was built in the XI-XII centuries on the site of the oldest chapel of the V century. The temple was consecrated in honor of Saint Eustorgius and serves as an example of a real Romanesque style.
Saint Eustorgius was a Milanese bishop who transferred from Constantinople the relics of the Magi (three kings). For a long time, the relics were stored in the Basilica of St. Eustorgio, but were later transported to Cologne, so only small particles of them are preserved in the church of Sant’Eustorgio.
The bell tower of the basilica is crowned instead of a cross with a prominent eight-pointed star. The beautiful altar of the temple, in which the relics of Eustorgius are located, is decorated in an amazing technique inherent in the Romanesque style. Of great importance is the painting “Saint Ambrose”, created by the master Giovanni Ambrogio Figino.
