St. Mark's Church in Milan
Piazza San Marco, 2, 20121 Milano, Italia
Description:
The Church of St. Mark is the most beautiful architectural monument in the city of Milan. The name of the church was received in gratitude to the Republic of St. Mark, which in the XII century helped the locals in the fight against Frederick Barbarossa.
In the XIII century, the church was built by Augustinians in the Gothic style. In the XVII century were added additional parts in the Baroque style, which made the Church of St. Mark the largest religious building in the city after Milan Cathedral.
It is known that in the early 1770s a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in the monastery at the church for several months. The church is also famous for the fact that on May 22, 1874, on the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni, Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem was first sounded.
Many famous figures are buried in the church. The walls of the church are decorated with medieval frescoes.
