Certosa di Pavia Monastery
8 km north of Pavia, Via Giuseppe Verdi, 5, Lombardy, Italy
Description:
The Cartesian monastery in the Gothic style was built by Galeazzo Visconti in the XIV century, and consecrated by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo in the XV century. Externally, the cathedral combines the innovations of Florentine architecture with the traditions of northern Gothic. Much has been borrowed from Milan Cathedral.
The cathedral has many colorful frescoes, altars decorated with precious stones, marble floors, statues of Roman emperors, a small garden, cells of monks, in which the saints lived in silence and contemplation.
14 chapels of the XV century, located inside the church, are works of great artists Perugino, Phoppa, Guercino. Over the tomb of the founder of Visconti worked Benedicto Briosco and Cristoforo Romano.
The monastery is famous for its bronze chandelier and stained glass windows, which were worked by Phoppa and Bergognone.
In 1866, the monastery was declared a museum of national importance.
