Piazza San Fedele

Piazza San Fedele, 20121 Milano, Italy

Description:

Piazza San Fedele is an elegant aristocratic corner of Milan next to the Plaza della Scala. Here is the church of San Fedele, built in 1569 by the Jesuits. The construction of the church of San Fedele was completed only in the XIX century. The building of the temple contains valuable utensils, furnishings, works of art, wooden inlaid choirs from the church of Santa Maria della Scala, dismantled in the 70s of the XVIII century to make room for the theater. In the church of San Fedelé in 1771, Mozart conducted the Song of the Passion, or Cantata della Passione. In the temple there is a fresco of the Madonna dei Torriani, written in the XV century, which, according to legend, is revered by ballerinas of the La Scala Theatre.

In 1883, a monument to the famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni was erected in front of the church. Previously, from 1872 to 1943, there was the Mazoni Theatre, destroyed by bombings of World War II. Behind the square stands a small three-storey palace. This is the house-museum of the writer, in which he lived from 1814 to 1873.
