San Carlo al Corso Cathedral

San Carlo al Corso Piazza San Carlo, 1, Milan

Description:

The Cathedral of San Carlo al Corso is located on the square of the same name in the historic center of Milan. The construction of the church in neoclassical style began in 1839 and was completed in 1847. Architect Carlo Amati built the cathedral with donations from the citizens, who willingly sponsored the construction in gratitude for the end of the cholera epidemic. The temple is dedicated to Saint Carlo Borromeo, who was the Bishop of Milan during the epidemic of bubonic plague in the XVI century.

The cathedral was built on the territory of the ancient church of St. Mary, which existed on this site in 1317. 36 monolithic granite columns limit the area in front of the central entrance of the temple, the cylindrical central part of which is crowned by a huge dome 36.9 meters high, designed by the architect Felice Pizagali. In general, the architectural solution resembles the pantheons in Rome and Paris. The small dome above the altar is painted with frescoes symbolizing the “Apotheosis of the Saint”, by Angelo Inganni, 1864.
