Porta Nuova Gate

Piazzale Principessa Clotilde, Milano, Italy

Description:

The Porto Nuova Gate, which means “New Gate” in Italian, and the Mura Spagnole or “Spanish Walls” were originally built between 1546 and 1560 during Spanish rule in Milan. They were located on the ancient Roman road between Milan and the Brianz district in northern Italy at the foot of the Alps.

The modern gate of Nuova was built on the same site in 1810-1813 by the architect Giuseppe Zanoya. This is a triumphal arch of blocks of yellow sandstone, decorated with bas-reliefs. On both sides of the gate are symmetrically located 2 smaller arches. These are former customs checkpoints. Over time, most of the original decorative elements of the gate were destroyed and are now virtually invisible.

The urban area of Porta Nuova is an area of skyscrapers and unusual architectural solutions. The tower is the tallest building in Italy, two towers Bosco Verticale or "Vertical Forest" on numerous terraces of which more than a thousand species of large plants, trees and bushes are planted.
