Ticinese Gate

Porta Ticinese, Piazza 24 Maggio, Milano

Description:

The Ticinese Gate is located on Maggio Square southwest of the city center. The Mura Spagnole Gate and City Walls or "Spanish Walls" were built between 1546 and 1560 during the Spanish rule of Milan. In the same area there is also the same name gate of the medieval period, but they are more often called Porta Ticinese medieval, that is, the medieval gate of Ticinese.

These gates were subsequently demolished and replaced by others to commemorate Napoleon's victory at the Battle of Marengo in 1800. The architect Luigi Cañola designed this gate in the neoclassical style in the form of a triumphal arch of 4 Ionic columns and 4 pillars supporting a roof with a triangular pediment, on which the inscription "PACI POPVLORVM SOPITAE" is embossed, which means "Towards a world that liberates peoples."

Around there are many small, original shops, shops of art crafts and antique trinkets, boutiques of eccentric fashion. In the local taverns and cafes, relaxation, fun, music and songs reign.
