Ancient Roman elite and Herculaneum
Description:
All tourists know about the city of Pompeii, but Herculaneum is no less interesting, I would not put it in second place, it even has its own features that you will not find in Pompeii. Herculaneum is much closer to Vesuvius than Pompeii, the city literally lies at his feet. Therefore, the pyroclastic flow, consisting of volcanic mud (there was no rain of pumice pebbles here as in Pompeii), overtook Herculaneum first, it was wiped off the face of the earth in a few seconds. The temperature here reached more than 400 ° C, which burned everything that came in its way.
This volcanic mud solidified into the hardest stone, which sealed the whole city like a vacuum capsule, creating unique conservation characteristics that have no equal. Therefore, no voids were found here during excavations, casts were not made as in Pompeii, but such organic material as wood, although in charred form, has survived to our days, here you can see wooden elements of buildings, charred wooden furniture and even charred bread, grains, etc. were found. In Herculaneum, the roofs did not collapse under the weight of stones and ash as in Pompeii, and many of them have survived, so you can fully feel the height of the city. Unfortunately, unlike Pompeii, a new city was founded on the site of the ancient city and still 80% of Herculaneum is under 21 m of volcanic stone and land. But the light saw the most beautiful part of the city with houses overlooking the sea, temples, forum, baths. Pompeii was a trading city when Herculaneum was an elegant and peaceful place for aristocartic families, not for nothing the famous Villa Papyrus is located here very close. There are fewer tourists and therefore fewer queues and pushes and therefore it is possible to really enjoy the town. The classic tour in Herculaneum takes 2 hours. But if you want, we can stay here and see what interests you. It is ideal to combine a tour to Herculaneum with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Naples, where frescoes, mosaics, the world's largest collection of ancient bronze statues, marble statues, the largest and most valuable collection of silverware from the ancient Roman period found to date, household items, papyri, etc. are stored. Also, a visit to Herculaneum is well combined with a visit to the volcano Vesuvius, the eruption of which led to the death of the ancient city.
