Excursion to Mount Vesuvius
Description:
Naples is located at the foot of the largest and still active volcano - Vesuvius. This is a visiting card of Italy, creating a unique image of Naples. Currently, the volcano is in a sleep phase, and while it sleeps, we will admire it. But in order to look inside the crater will have to work, the height of the volcano 1277 meters, the last section must be walked. But, up there, the spirit is breathtaking with beauty and a little fear. Unfortunately, it is one of the most dangerous volcanoes, which brought sad but immortal glory to the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabia and Oplonti. Then the eruption was explosive. The last eruption was in 1944 with the flow of lava, which filled the caldera and then flowed along one of the hollows towards settlements.
Climbing Vesuvius is perfectly combined with a visit to the archaeological excavations of the dead cities, Pompeii or Herculaneum. Here is a little-known villa Oplonti, it is assumed that it belonged to Poppea, the second wife of Nero. Here you can see gardens, atrium, peristiliums, salons, guest rooms, triclinias (chamber halls), viridariums, thermals, kitchen, pool, toilet. The villa was discovered in the XVIII century, but systematic excavations began only in 1968. In the XX century, the discovered monuments were treated much more carefully than in the XVIII, and therefore the frescoes of the villa remained in place, and were not carried to the museum, as happened with many Pompeii and Herculane. There are few visitors here, so you can see everything as thoroughly as time allows. An excursion to Vesuvius can also be combined with a walk in Naples - because the volcano is a symbol of this city!
