Castle de Ovo
Via Vittorio Emanuele III, 80133 Naples Napoli, Italy
Description:
The Gothic fortress of Castelle de Ovo was built in 1279 by order of King Charles of Anjou, in connection with the transfer of the capital to Naples. For many centuries, the fortress was the center of Italian political life, the most important decisions were made outside its walls, which fundamentally changed the history of Italy.
Above the gates of the castle stands the triumphal arch - a majestic work of Renaissance architecture, which was built in honor of the entry into the city of King Alfonso the Fifth. On October 1, 1805, the fortress was captured by a Russian squadron under the command of Dmitry Senyavin.
Numerous legends are also associated with the fortress of Castelle de Ovo. Neapolitans are sure that the nymph Parthenopea lived here, about which the legend of Virgil tells so picturesquely.
