Pompeii Museum
About the company:
The Pompeii Museum is located in Campania, Italy. This open-air museum represents the remains of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The city was buried under a layer of ash as a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations of the city were begun in 1748 under the direction of R. J. Alcubierre, who believed it to be the city of Stabia. In 1760-1804 there were excavations, led by F. le Vega. Then it became known that the found city is Pompeii.
In 1863, Giuseppe Fiorelli began to lead the excavations. During the excavation, a large number of voids were found. These voids were filled with plaster and received casts of bodies of Pompeii residents, decaying in volcanic soil.
About 80 percent of the ancient city has been cleared. Since the city died suddenly, for a long time was under a layer of ash and frozen volcanic lava, there are perfectly preserved streets, sidewalks, houses, defensive walls of the city, a theater, antique baths, temples and other buildings. The statues that adorned the ancient city also survived. In the homes of wealthy residents you can see wall frescoes. On the territory of Pompeii, a museum is organized, in which objects discovered during excavations are exhibited: bowls, amphorae made of clay, various household items. Here you can also see casts from the bodies of the dead inhabitants of this ancient city.
