Cafe without doors
Via VIII Febbraio, 15 35122, Padova (PD)
About the company:
Caffe Pedrocchi is famous for the fact that it went down in the history of the city as a place of meetings and meetings of creative, scientific intelligentsia, and of course students. The cafe has large squares divided into several halls: Egyptian (decorated with statues of sphinxes), Moorish with bizarre stained glass windows and paintings, Roman, as well as White, Green and several others. I would like to dwell on the last two rooms in more detail.
The forty years of the XIX century turned out to be a turbulent time for Italian history and it was in Padua, in Caffe Pedrocchi, a student revolt against the Austrians was being prepared, and on one of the walls of the White Hall you can still distinguish the trace of a bullet that ended the life of one of the young conspirators in 1848. Another “colored” hall – Green is remarkable in that you can stay in it as long as you like without ordering anything at all. For poor students, it was a great opportunity to come together, argue and reason without turning their empty pockets.
Of the celebrities, the French classic Stendhal liked to visit the cafe, moreover, he mentions Caffe Pedrocchi in the preface to the “Parma Monastery”. And writer Christine Valla immortalized this cafe in her novel “Tourists”.
