Giardini dell'Arena
Piazza Eremitani, 8, 35121 Padova, Italy
Description:
Walking in this quiet well-groomed park, you can see the ruins of the arena where gladiator battles took place at the turn of the old and new era: a spectacle that was no less popular in ancient Italy than today, say, football. There is also a chapel Scrovegni built in 1303, within the walls of which you can see wonderful frescoes by the famous Italian artist and architect Giotto di Bondone. The building with seemingly minimalism (there are no elegant cornices or columns) has a unique Gothic charm.
Admiring the chapel, you can visit the monastery of Eremitani, now serving as a museum.
The landscape designer of the park Giardini dell'Arena tried to fame - neatly trimmed lawns and trees, as well as ponds surrounded by floral ornament, create a unique mood and cause the desire of tourists who once visited the park to return here again.
