Padua

Signoria Square

piazza della Signoria, Padua, Italy

Description:

Piazza della Signoria is the traditional name of the central squares of Italian cities, where the city authorities were located. There is such a square in Padua.

Its appearance is formed by strict, discreet, but elegant buildings. One of them is the medieval Admiralty. The classic building with a central tower above the arch looks majestic. Above the arch is a unique mechanical clock, one of the first in Italy. They show the time, the day of the week, the month, the phase of the moon and the sign of the zodiac.

Other buildings of the square are the Loggia de la Gran Guardia, where in the Middle Ages the so-called “Grand Council” met, the 16th century Capitano Palace, the clock tower and the ancient church of San Clemente.

For tourists, there are many cafes and restaurants, as well as souvenir shops.
