Porta Altinate Gateway

Porta Altinate, Padova, Italy

Description:

As many of us know from the school curriculum of the history of the Middle Ages, these times were turbulent and saturated with all sorts of military clashes. If not the overseas invaders, so the local gangs of robbers posed a rather serious threat to the peace of the citizens, and therefore in those days it was customary to build around the city fortress walls, ditches and gates, through which you could get into the city. The Porta Altinate provided security for its inhabitants until the Crusaders destroyed the gate in 1256. After 30 years, the Porta Altinate has been rebuilt, and now, walking through Garibaldi Square, you can see this tall stone arch, reminiscent of those harsh times when the construction of the city gate was not a whim of the architect, but an urgent need.
