Church of Santo Spirito
Via Porta Aurea, 48121 Ravenna RA, Italy
Description:
The Church of Santo Spirito was built in XVIII in honor of the Holy Spirit. It is located next to the Orthodox Baptistery, built at the end of the fifth century.
The first church on this site appeared in the V century on the initiative of the local bishop of Ursa. At that time it was known as the Ursian Basilica. After many centuries, the building collapsed, and in its place a new temple was built by the architect Gian Francesco Buonamici.
The church building is decorated with porticoes with three arches. Inside, the building consists of three naves, which contain ancient sarcophagi, decorative panels, an ancient pulpit and other monuments of early Christian art. In one of the sarcophagi rests the body of the Ravenna bishop Rinaldo da Concorreggio, and in the other - the relics of St. Barbatian, revered among the inhabitants of Ravenna.
