Rimini

The Cone Fountain

Piazza Cavour, 47921 Rimini RN, Italy

Description:

Fountain "Shishka" is located on the square Cavour. It was built in 1543 at the behest of Giovanna of Carrara. The drum above which stands Shishka was built at the end of the era of the Roman Empire. The fountain was the only source of fresh water in the city of Rimini until 1912, when the state water supply began to operate.

In the middle of the 16th century, the “bump” adorning the fountain was removed and a statue of Pope Paul III was installed in its place. As a result of the ruthless destruction of half of the city by Napoleon's troops, some parts of the fountain's structure were damaged, especially the statue of the Pope. But at the beginning of the 19th century, in 1807, the fountain was restored and it was given its original appearance, pleasing the eyes of citizens to destruction. Instead of the statue, the “bump” that gave the fountain its name was returned to its place.
