Rubicon River

rubicon River, Adriatic Sea, Rimini

Description:

The Rubicon is a small river located north of Rimini, on the Apennine Peninsula, and flows into the Adriatic Sea. It is known for the famous phrase “cross the Rubicon”, which means a decision.

Until 42 BC, the Rubicon River served as a border between the province of Cisalpine Gaul and Italy. As for the phraseology “cross the Rubicon”, its appearance refers to the period of Julius Caesar’s life, when he was still a proconsul (Roman military commander), and Rome itself – a republic. According to the basic law, the commander could lead the army only outside Italy, but in 49 BC Julius Caesar approached the river with his legionaries. After some deliberation, the proconsul crossed the Rubicon, and after the events of the Civil War, Caesar became emperor.

Currently, the river has turned in some places into a sewage ditch, its waters are depleted due to exploitation in the upper bed of groundwater.
