Tempio Malatesta Cathedral
Via IV Novembre, 38, 47921 Rimini RN, Italy
Description:
Tempio Malatesta is a cathedral located in Rimini, in one of the historical centers of the city.
In the XIII century Tempio Malatestiano was a monastery, supplemented by the XIV century two small chapels. With the help of Italian architects and artists, the interior of the church was renewed and marble was brought from Fano and Ravenna. The stone was taken from disassembled ancient buildings and temples. The famous Giotto performed in Tempio Malatesta a series of frescoes and a crucifix, which is well preserved to our times.
On the main facade of the cathedral, arches are repeated three times, and inside the central one there is a portal with a triangular tympan created from marble. The side facades of the cathedral look solemn, but quite simple and connected by blind arches with each other.
The main work at Tempio Malatesta was completed in 1503, but part of the temple's interior and facade were not completed. In 1809, the Cathedral was destroyed due to the actions of Napoleonic troops. In the late 90s of the XX century, with the financing of the Fondazione Cassa di Rimini, the temple was restored.
